Priest Charged After β€œBehavior” With Woman in Park

Church officials say a Roman Catholic priest has been relieved of his duties in northeastern Pennsylvania after being charged with open lewdness.

Court documents indicate the Rev. Daniel J. Doherty is also charged with public intoxication stemming from an incident at a park in Wyalusing.

According to the Diocese of Scranton, Doherty and a woman were "engaged in behavior" that resulted in the charges on May 17.

Doherty has been working as an assistant pastor at churches in Tunkhannock and Lake Winola.

The diocese issued a statement Thursday saying Doherty has been prohibited from exercising public ministry until the case is resolved.

Doherty could not be reached for comment. It was not immediately clear he had an attorney.
