Hammer Mistaken for Gunshots Prompted Princeton Police Swarm

Campus was on alert for several hours on Tuesday night

Princeton University says what an employee thought was the sound of gunshots inside a campus building on Tuesday night, turned out to be nothing more than a hammer hitting a chisel.

Spokesman Martin Mbugua said on Thursday a maintence worker was using the tools to fix a door inside Nassau Hall shortly before a report of gunshots was called into the school's public safety office around 8 p.m.

Police from all around the Ivy League school swarmmed campus and set up a periminter around the historic buiding for several hours.

Officers told people to stay inside as they conducted sweeps and investigated the claims. The all-clear was eventually given aroun 10:30 p.m.

"We take all reports from our community extremely seriously," public safety head Paul Ominsky said in a statement. "The response and collaboration from my team, the Princeton Police Department and others throughout this incident were outstanding."

The school said they encourage students, faculty and staff to report any safety matters to security.
