Man Shot by Police After Crash ID'd

Authorities have released the name of a man shot and killed by police in central Pennsylvania who said he came after them with a knife after a traffic accident.

The York County coroner's office said 40-year-old Joseph Penderghest of Herndon, Va., was the man shot shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday outside an apartment complex in Springfield Township.

State police said a man hit several parked cars and a telephone pole and was sitting in the car, cutting himself with an 8-inch folding knife.

State troopers tried to get him to stop, and used pepper spray and stun guns, but reported that the man then came toward them with the knife, and they shot and killed him.

The case is being investigated by police, prosecutors and the coroner's office.
