23-year-old Charles Mulhern turned himself into police around 8 p.m. on Tuesday. He's accused of hitting a 10-year-old girl in Fishtown with his vehicle and then fleeing the scene last week.
The alleged hit-and-run driver who injured a 10-year-old girl turned himself in on Tuesday.
Family attorney Joe Kelly told NBC10's Deanna Durante that his client, 23-year-old Charles Mulhern, was the hit-and-run driver who struck 10-year-old Sarah Givens last Thursday in Fishtown. Mulhern turned himself in to 15th District Police Headquarters around 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
Last Thursday, Givens was walking on the 2400 block of Memphis Street in Fishtown when she was struck by a white SUV that fled the scene. Givens suffered a broken leg and a facial injury.
"What would you say to the person who hit you and kept going?" asked NBC10's Daralene Jones.
"I would tell them that I'm really mad at them," Sarah said.
Detectives obtained surveillance video of the vehicle, a white GMC SUV, that they suspect struck the young girl. They identified Mulhern as a person of interest and also found the suspected hit-and-run vehicle. Mulhern turned himself in on Tuesday and is in the process of being charged.
"He panicked and he made a mistake," said Kelly. "He realized he hurt somebody and he's going to be held responsible for that."
"We're grateful someone has come forward," said Sarah's father, Jim Givens. "We appreciate the police department and their efforts to help us out as well as the news."
Sarah's 14-year-old sister, Kylee, was also struck by a vehicle just two days after Sarah's accident. Police say Kylee was walking on Cheltenham and Torresdale Avenue on Saturday around 8:30 p.m. when she was struck by a white 4-door vehicle with tint driven by a man. Investigators say the striking vehicle stopped a half a block away from the scene and then fled before police arrived.
"This guy got out of the car, looked at her, then got back in his car and left," said Jim Givens. "I don't know which one is worse."
Kylee is currently hospitalized in critical condition with a ruptured spleen and broken ribs.
