A single-vehicle accident early Thursday in a rural area of northern Pennsylvania killed one PennDOT employee and injured four others.
Christopher Kerns, 53, was driving near Roaring Branch in Tioga County when he lost control rounding a curve, causing the vehicle to strike a reflector pole and guard rails, state police in Mansfield said. The vehicle then went down an embankment and landed on its roof.
Kerns, of Linden, was pronounced dead at the scene; the four passengers were taken to a hospital in Williamsport.
PennDOT said the five were in a state-owned vehicle and traveling from Williamsport to open the Monroeton driver license center in Towanda for the day.
A statement from the agency said PennDOT was saddened by Kerns' death and extended condolences to all the affected families.
The Daily Review of Towanda, citing Tioga County deputy coroner James Daugherty, said the employees were a team that administers driver's license tests.
The Monroeton driver's license center was closed because of the accident.
