Car Strikes, Kills Penn State University Grad Student Near Campus

A graduate student was killed when he was struck by a vehicle near Penn State's main campus.

State College police Lt. Mark Argiro says investigators were still attempting Tuesday to determine who was at fault in the death of 23-year-old Michael Eiben (EYE'-ben) on Monday night.

Eiben, of Wexford, is a graduate of North Allegheny High School near Pittsburgh.

He was crossing at an intersection about 10:45 p.m. when he was hit by a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Joel Berger, of State College.

Berger has not been cited or charged in the incident.

Police say it appears neither man had been drinking, but tests to confirm that were being completed.

Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers was working toward his master's thesis in the university's five-year engineering program.
