Pa. Officer Shot Tractor-Trailer Driver on I-80

State police say a local police officer shot a tractor-trailer driver after a confrontation following a highway stop on Memorial Day.

Police in Columbia County say a Hemlock Township officer pulled the rig over on an Interstate 80 off-ramp near Bloomsburg for equipment violations at about 9 p.m. Monday.

Troopers said the rig's driver became irate, and the officer fired a stun gun at him but it had no effect. Police allege that the driver then pulled out pepper spray and also hit the officer on the hand with a hammer, causing him to lose his grip on the stun gun.

Troopers said the officer then shot the driver twice. He was taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville where he was hospitalized but was expected to recover.
