Speeding Car Slams Police Cruiser

Two Philadelphia police officers were injured when a speeding car broadsided their police vehicle.

The accident took place at 68th Street and Woodland Avenue at 1:05 A.M. on Sunday.

A 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo came careening down Woodland Avenue at a high rate of speed, flying through a steady red light.

At the same time, officers Antoinette Bethel and David Barbour were traveling through the intersection in a police car.  The Monte Carlo collided with the cruiser and sent it flying into a street sign.

The Chevy continued south through the intersection, until it collided with parked vehicles on 68th Street.  The driver of the vehicle leapt out of the car and fled on foot.  The suspect remains at large.

The officers in the accident sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.  Officer Bethel, a four-year veteran, suffered a fractured leg, a fractured jaw, and internal injuries.  Officer Barbour, who had been on the force for seven years, sustained a concussion.
