Widespread power outages caused by the severe storm that tore through the region Tuesday continued on Friday in many areas.
More than 82,500 customers in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey remained without power as of Friday morning.
PECO officials said they expect power to be restored to most customers by Friday. AC Electric Region Vice President Susan Coan said in a statement Wednesday evening that the company expected to restore service to all its customers by midnight Sunday, but that most will likely have their service back before Saturday afternoon.
Lendel Jones, a spokeswoman for AC Electric, said more AC Electric customers lost power in Tuesday's storm than in Hurricane Sandy. During Sandy, 220,000 lost service, she said, but the severity of the damage to power equipment was much worse, so outages lasted longer.
AC Electric officials said extensive storm damage to electrical infrastructure that affected high-voltage transmission lines serving thousands was to blame for the massive outages in its service area.
Both AC Electric and PECO said additional workers were being brought in from as far away as Ohio to repair damage caused by the storm and restore power.
Jones said AC Electric was working with the Red Cross and the Office of Emergency Management to get ice and water for residents affected by the outages.
