Nutter, Officials Launch “PhillyPowered” Campaign for Healthy Living

Mayor Michael Nutter and other city officials launched PhillyPowered, an 18-month, multi-media campaign designed to encourage the community to become more active, therefore reducing the risk of Type II Diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Philadelphia has the highest rate for these diseases out of the nation’s ten largest cities, according to officials.

“Too many of our friends and neighbors are suffering from diseases that could have been avoided by eating healthier foods and exercising more,” Nutter said in a release.

The campaign will display stories of Philadelphians on their journeys to healthier lifestyles. While showing their successes, the campaign will also show their hardships and failures along the way. The campaign will feature radio commercials, billboards, and advertisements at transit stops.

The campaign’s website, PhillyPowered.org, holds a database of hundreds of free or low-cost places to get fit in Philadelphia. The website also features a social media component where users can share their own tips, questions, and more with other users. The website’s information is in both English and Spanish.
