For many customers the new Wegmans is a shopping experience.

Who knew the grand-opening of a grocery store could garner the same excitement as a rock concert coming to town? Apparently owners of the new Wegmans in Collegeville sure did.

More than 1,500 people formed lines around the new store in Providence Town Center an hour before Sunday morning’s 7 a.m. grand opening.

The new Wegmans, located off Route 422 in Montgomery County, is more than just a place to pick up fresh groceries -- it a shopping experience, according to owners.

Customers can also enjoy a full-service restaurant that seats three hundred, a café, a bar called “The Pub” that serves beer on tap, wine and mixed drinks, the convenience of a Pharmacy, and Complements shop filled with cooking electronics and linens.

The opening also bought much needed jobs to the area.  Wegman’s hired 600 workers from more than six thousand applications.
