Man Gets 14-28 Years in Pa. Tied-to-Tree Case

A man will serve 14 to 28 years in state prison in the death of an eastern Pennsylvania man whose body was found tied to a tree.

A jury convicted 49-year-old Keith Reber of Schuylkill Haven in June of involuntary manslaughter, kidnapping and related charges in the death of 26-year-old Bryan Smith of Orwigsburg in May 2012.

The Republican-Herald of Pottsville reports Schuylkill County Judge Charles Miller at Wednesday's sentencing hearing called Reber unmerciful and callous and said he acted with a total disregard for his victim's life.

Prosecutors said Reber gagged and shackled Smith to a tree for 20 hours on a hot day. Smith eventually died.

Reber says he intended for Smith to have a "timeout'' as a punishment for stealing.
