More than two dozen Atlantic City firefighters who were laid off last year for budget reasons are returning to their jobs.
The firefighters union says 29 firefighters have been sworn back into service and will report for their shifts beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The city also is planning to use $9.7 million in federal grant money to hire 21 new firefighters. That would put the department strength at close to 250 members.
The layoffs had forced officials to close some fire companies on various days.
