Jury Selection Set for Soldier in Slaying of Teen Girlfriend's Mom

Jury selection is scheduled to start Monday in the trial of a soldier accused of killing his then-14-year-old girlfriend's mother after the woman objected to their age difference.

Twenty-two-year-old Army Spc. Caleb Barnes is charged with first-degree murder and other crimes in the March 2015 stabbing of 54-year-old Cheryl Silvonek.

Jamie Silvonek, who is now 15, was tried as an adult and pleaded guilty in February. She's agreed to testify against Barnes and is serving 35 years to life in prison.

Investigators have said they recovered deleted text messages between her and Barnes in which the teen was plotting her mother's killing, including one that read: "I want her gone."

Jury selection was to begin Thursday but was rescheduled for Monday.
