A local woman says her eyelashes were ruined after paying to have extended-wear fake lashes put on at an area salon.
She ended up in a hospital emergency room in severe pain. It turns out the eyelash glue used on her lashes is made of the same ingredient as super glue, cyanoacrylate.
As a matter of fact, I used eyelash glue to fix a broken mug.
We are not talking about dime store lash glues that come off with soap and water. This is the kind of glue that will keep lashes on for several weeks.
Here's what you need to know:
- Make sure you ask questions about the lash glue and the training of the person who is going to put extended wear lashes on you.
- The ingredient you want to ask about it is Cyanoacrylate. Cyanoacrylate is Super Glue. Some companies say they can apply lashes safely with cyanoacrylate glue because they specially train their technicians. Training and experience is important.
- Eyelash technicians should be glueing your fake lashes to your real lashes. The glue should never touch your skin or get in your eye.
- Many of the lash glues sold on line from Asia also have cyanoacrylate in them. You don't try to use this glue on yourself.
- About 4-percent of the population is also allergic to acrylates. If you are one of those people you could have a severe reaction to this kind of glue around your eye.
If you experience a problem with cyanoacrylate glue at a salon, the Food and Drug Administration wants to know about it.
