Baby Girl Dies in Fire

Neighbor called 911 after seeing smoke rising from home

A house fire has claimed the life of a baby and left her mother and sister fighting for their lives.

The fire broke out inside a home along the 1200 block of Carolyn Drive in Upper Southampton Township, Pa. just after 2 p.m. Tuesday, fire officials say.

It was a neighbor who called 911 after seeing smoke rising from the home.

Police officers were first on the scene and tried to enter the home from the rear door, but had to turn back after running into heavy smoke, officials say.

When firefighters arrived, they were able to make it to the second floor of the home and rescue a woman, her 4-year-old daughter and an infant girl, officials say.

All three were rushed to St. Mary's Medical Center in Langhorne, Pa. in critical condition. Unfortunately, the baby girl did not survive.

The mother was transferred to Temple University Hospital for treatment. Her daughter was taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Both were last listed in critical condition, officials say.

The fire was brought under control after 3 p.m. Investigators are searching for the cause.
