New Jersey Officer Loses Gun During Struggle With Suspect

Suspect returns weapon after incident with police

State Police expect a New Jersey man to turn himself in after he drove off with an officer’s gun in his car.

The incident played out along the 300 block of U.S. Route 40 near Route 5 in Franklinville, New Jersey around 3 p.m. Monday.

Police said officers on a stakeout moved in on a man suspected in a shooting in Millville last week. During the encounter, a struggle ensued and somehow the suspect grabbed a Cumberland County Sheriff officer’s weapon, according to the county sheriff's office.

The officer suffered some minor scratches, according to state police.

The unidentified suspect then drove off. Officers could be seen setting up a perimeter around the area as they searched for the suspect’s vehicle.

Police recovered the gun around 5 p.m. inside the suspect's vehicle but the suspect remained on the loose. A short time alter the suspect’s attorney called Millville Police to report that his client would turn himself in without further incident.
