“Irrational” Cop Shooting Defendant Tells Judge He'd Rather Be Executed

Bid for new lawyer rejected in Pa. police shooting

One of the men charged with murder in the death of a Philadelphia police officer in 2008 following a bank robbery has told the trial judge that he would rather be executed than be represented by his court-appointed legal team.

Thirty-five-year-old Eric Floyd indicated during jury selection Monday that he disagreed with the trial strategy of attorneys William Bowe and Earl Kauffman. Common Pleas Court Judge Renee Cardwell Hughes rejected the request and also told Floyd that he wouldn’t allow him to represent himself because he was being “irrational.”

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty although neither Floyd nor his 41-year-old co-defendant Levon Warner fired the shots that killed 39-year-old Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski in May 2008. Authorities say

A third man, Howard Cain, pulled the trigger and was later killed by police, authorities said.
