Ex-Cop Danny Castro Faces Retrial

Former police inspector will be back in court following jury deadlock on extortion charges

Former Philadelphia Police inspector Danny Castro will once again have to defend himself in federal court after the U.S. Attorney filed a motion to retry the case.

Castro's federal corruption trial ended last month in a split decision.

He was accused of using a middle man (who turned out to be a government informant) to help him find someone who'd get money back that Castro lost in a bad investment.

A jury found Castro, 47, guilty of lying to the FBI, not guilty of the one of the most serious extortion charges and jurors were deadlocked on the the eight other charges, opening the door for a retrial.

A former rising star in the Philadelphia Police Department, Castro was reduced to tears during cross-examination in the original trial when questioned about his alleged actions.

"You're making me look like something I'm not," Castro said through tears at the time.

Castro eventually admitted to committing extortion saying it was the biggest mistake of my life," but contended he was forced into the situation.

New trial proceedings are set for August 22, 2011 at the United States District Court in Old City.
