Lehigh Valley ER Doctor Faces Charges He Sexually Abused Kids

Police say an eastern Pennsylvania doctor has been charged with sexually abusing two children over three years.

Vamsimadhav Korrapati, of Bethlehem, turned himself in on Wednesday. He is charged with two felony counts each of indecent assault of a person under age 13, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of children.

Police say the crimes took place from November 2011 to May 2014. Police say he groped two children — a 5-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy — and made one of them perform a sex act.

The children made statements to Northampton County Children and Youth.

"The decision to charge was made based on the statements of the child. And from what I was told the children are very credible and are able to relay what happened to them," said Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said.

The 41-year-old India native told authorities he has worked at several Lehigh Valley Hospitals. But he says he hasn't been practicing medicine for more than a year because of the pending charges.

Korrapati's lawyer, Philip Lauer, said his client is claiming innocence.

"We're just looking forward to our day in court. Our hope is that — not withstanding the type of charge —  is that everybody will keep an open mind," he said.
