A fire that caused $60,000 to a Delaware playground was intentionally set and neighbors told NBC10 the fire may have been started by a young boy trying to fend off mosquitoes.
The fire started about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Simonds Gardens Park in New Castle.
When firefighters arrived to the scene, the newly-constructed playground was fully engulfed in flames.
The state’s Fire Marshal’s office ruled Thursday the fire was intentionally started by someone igniting combustibles.
On Thursday, neighbors told NBC10 that a young boy who was trying to fight off mosquitoes lit a match. Neighbors say the match then came into contact with dry mulch, which ignited, spreading to the playground equipment.
The damage is estimated to be approximately $60,000.
The Fire Marshal’s office continues to investigate.
