Delaware Extends Driver's License Renewal Periods

The license renewal period will be extended from the current five years to up to eight years beginning in January

State transportation officials are extending the renewal period for driver's licenses, meaning fewer trips to the Division of Motor Vehicles.

The Delaware Department of Transportation says the license renewal period will be extended from the current five years to up to eight years starting in January.

Officials say the change will offer more convenience to motorists and cut costs as well. They say the growing number of drivers and registered vehicles is projected to put increasing strain on DMV customer service.

Officials say that until the change is fully implemented in 2016, the new process will require that some licenses be renewed for less than the full eight years. A computer program will randomly select those with expiring licenses for renewal lengths of five, six, seven, or eight years.
