Dad Coaches Son to Bully Kid, Then Assaults Teacher: Police

A Berks County elementary school teacher was assaulted by a parent when she tried to break up a fight between his son and another student, according to police.

James R. Manning was not just watching the fight at Muhlenberg Elementary Center Wednesday, witnesses say he was encouraging his son to hit the other kid again.

When the teacher tried to intervene, Manning grabbed her by the arm and pushed her away.

Manning, 34, told the teacher, "Don't ever touch my son, or I will hurt you," according to police detective James A. Pollock, Jr.

The initial fight started after school when an 11-year-old ran to the teacher and said another student was trying to kill him. Manning's son, 12, showed up and according to Pollock, started beating the boy.

"He pushed him in front of moving car in the parking lot and continued to assault him," said Lt. Joe Schlappich.

The teacher suffered a bruised arm.

Police used two sets of handcuffs to arrest Manning, saying he was combative and verbally abusive.

He's charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and related offenses.
