Cops Go High Tech to Catch Suspected Thief

Police Turn to Facebook & YouTube in smash-and-grab case.

An unidentified man uses a cinder block to smash into a Food Mart in Gloucester Township, NJ, and area police turn to social media to help track him down.

About two weeks ago, on April 7, 2011, police say the masked man in the surveillance video broke into the Food Mart at 1400 Gloucester Road—near the Autumn Ridge Apartments—just after 10 p.m. using a large cinder block. He then hopped onto the counter and, police suspect, stole a bag of Bugler menthol tobacco and two counterfeit $100 bills that were taped next to the shelves towards which the suspect reached.

Investigators are focusing their attention on the nearby Autumn Ridge Apartments, which is toward the direction of the apartment complex.

But to broaden the net, police have turned to Facebook and YouTube. The latter’s video compiles different angles from different cameras to show the suspect swinging the cinderblock to break the glass door, jumping onto the counter, and reaching off camera. There’s a quick glimpse of a portion of the man’s face around 0:35.

Gloucester Township Police’s Facebook page has the YouTube video embedded and contact information.

Here’s the description of the suspect, according to the police: “The light skinned, possibly white, male suspect is wearing long rubber gloves, possibly kitchen and bath cleaning gloves, a brown camouflage hooded coat, [and a] black knitted hat with the lower portion of his face covered. The suspect appeared to be wearing dark plaid pajama pants that display his white socks.”
