Camden Library Workers Get Layoff Notices

The 19 people who work at Camden's two remaining libraries face layoffs as the Camden County government prepares to take over.

The Courier-Post of Cherry Hill and The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that layoff notices were sent out Wednesday.

In August, officials said the city's subsidy for its libraries had shrunk so much that the system could not survive.

One of the three libraries in the city was shuttered.

Now, the county plans to take over the Ferry Avenue Branch. The main branch downtown could be closed and replaced with a space carved out of Rutgers University's Robeson Library.

Library employees who are laid off effective Feb. 11 will be able to apply for jobs with the county library.
