Plan to Use Unused Island for Delaware River Dredging Sediment

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it plans to award a contract by the end of the week to clear 40 acres of state-owned land on a 400-acre uninhabited island for a site to deposit dredge sediment from the Delaware River.

The Courier-Post in Cherry Hill reports the agency has received 10 bids for the Burlington Island project.

A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers says he hopes work will begin within 15 days of the award and be finished within three months.

The agency says the area would be used to deposit sediment from future maintenance dredging. The most recent dredging occurred last year near the island.

There are no immediate plans for additional dredging. Burlington officials say they oppose putting dredge spoils on the island.
