Bulldog Blog: Flu Vaccines & Giving Thanks

Brady McHale, a sophomore at Lower Merion, will be giving readers an inside look at high school life throughout the school year.

Students in Lower Merion School District were given the choice of getting the H1N1 vaccine this week.

Parents had to sign a waiver in order for students to get the swine flu vaccine. About half the student body received the vaccination Tuesday.

“We’ve had over 50-percent participation, which is a high number for a school based clinic which is one of the reasons why we wanted to do it during the school day,” said Terry Quinlan, Lower Merion’s coordinator of health services, said

Many students felt relief after getting their shot knowing the severity of the flu.

But, this short week was about more than just shots.

As eager students (and faculty) waited to start up their Thanksgiving breaks I thought it would be a good idea to ask some students and administrators what they were thankful for this year:

“I’m thankful for my new wife and her family. And my own family remains as close as ever.”
- Chad Henneberry, history teacher

“I’m thankful for having a family to share Thanksgiving dinner with and laugh, joke and all that good stuff.”
- Jeremy Lordan, student

“I’m thankful that my Aunt has been staying with us the past week. She has been a huge help with the kids she’s even made some meals. Its allowed me and my wife to have some time together and get some Christmas shopping out of the way.”
- Scott Seibert, Technology teacher

“I’m thankful to get to have a day with my wife and two kids, and also being so lucky to have the students that I have here at Lower Merion.”
- Sean Hughes, Principal of Lower Merion

As for me, I’m thankful for my family and for the opportunities given to me by NBCPhiladelphia. I wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving and look forward to talking to you next week. As always, feel free to drop me an email.
