Brinks Armored Truck Flips Over in South Philadelphia

A second crash happened a short time later as police tried to re-route traffic in the area

A Brinks armored truck flipped onto its side in South Philadelphia late Friday, police said.

The crash happened at Penrose and Island avenues, just south of Philadelphia International Airport, around 10:30 p.m.

The truck's driver and passengers were able to climb out, police said. No word on if they were injured.

SWAT officers were being called in to guard the area until the cash inside is transferred to another armored truck.

What caused the driver to loose control of the truck remains unclear.

A short time after the truck flipped over, two drivers slammed into a police cruiser at the base of the Platt Bridge, police said.

The road was blocked off because of the Brinks crash.

The drivers of those vehicles and police were not injured.
