Bookkeeper Sent to Prison for Embezzlement

Prosecutors say a bookkeeper who stole more than $570,000 from her employer's accounts has been sentenced to five years in prison.

The Record reports that lawyers for 57-year-old Patricia Slattery of Dumont had sought a shorter sentence, claiming her crime had been driven by painkiller addiction.

But Bergen County prosecutors disputed those claims and also noted that she had been convicted of a similar embezzlement crime several years ago.

In both cases, prosecutors say Slattery took advantage of online banking programs by creating false invoices in the names of her employers' regular customers and diverting payments to an account she controlled.

In the case she was sentenced for on Friday, authorities say Slattery stole $572,760 from an Englewood Cliffs travel company between 2007 and 2012.
