When Carrie Kohs first started selling wooden spinning tops and handcrafted kaleidoscopes at the farmer’s market in Ardmore, Montgomery County, she never considered opening up a storefront.
But then her business, pucciManuli, started to boom and it wasn’t long before Kohs outgrew her space at the farmer’s market. Two years ago, she decided to take advantage of a burgeoning commercial renaissance brewing in downtown Ardmore and leased a 1,000-square-foot storefront at 35 Cricket Ave.
“I think in today’s mass-produced society, quality is often forgotten,” she said.
Kohs is among an increasing number of family-owned boutiques and regional chains that have opened during the last few years in Ardmore, injecting a unique mix of retailers and restaurants into the suburban business district.
Ardmore isn’t alone in this trend. Small towns across the region such as Malvern, Phoenixville, West Chester, Kennett Square, and even those across the river like Haddonfield are home to a similar blend of stores and eateries in their downtowns.
