Judge Denies Bail for Man Charged in 1984 Rape, Murder of 14-Year-Old Bensalem Girl

A Bucks County judge has denied bail for a man charged in the rape and killing of a 14-year-old girl found dead in the woods in suburban Philadelphia more than 30 years ago.

Fifty-five-year-old George Shaw Jr., of Florida, was arraigned Saturday. He's charged in Bucks County in the 1984 slaying of Barbara Rowan, a neighbor in Bensalem who baby-sat his 3-year-old daughter.

Authorities allege that Shaw was high on methamphetamine at the time. A Bucks County district judge denied him bail Saturday based on the severity of the crime.

Fifty-one-year-old Robert Sanders of Stroudsburg is charged with hindering apprehension or prosecution.

A police affidavit says Shaw was questioned repeatedly following the discovery of the girl's body two weeks after she disappeared.

The Bucks County Courier Times reports that the victim's relatives, including her mother, wept quietly during Saturday's arraignment.
