Rabies Scare Forces Family Vaccination

Family surprised to learn affectionate cat was infected

When a cute grey kitten showed up on the Wargo family's doorstep, they figured there'd be no harm in feeding the feline.

The same could be said for other homeowners in the family's Blue Bell, Pa. neighborhood.

But when one woman noticed the kitty wasn't acting normal, she took the cat to the vet and found it was infected with rabies.

"This cat was adorable," Rick Wargo said. "It's affection just brought you into it."

When the family learned the cat had to be put down, Rick and his wife Karen immediately took their 3-year-old twins to the emergency room.

"The emergency room is the only place that carries the vaccine," Karen said. The children were given two shots each. Karen says she got four and Rick was given five.

The family never imagined the cat could be rabid especially since it didn't show any of the typical signs.

"I would never think a cat that looked healthy was actually sick," Karen said.

Veterinarians warn people to keep an eye out for bite wounds, animals that are overly aggressive or even overly affectionate.

Whitpain Township officials are warning other residents who may have been in contact with the cat or another animal displaying the signs to seek medical attention.
