Violent Crash Kills 2 Del. Teens

The unfortunate combination of inexperience behind the wheel and speed apparently claimed two lives Thursday afternoon.

Two teenagers were killed when the car they were in lost control, crashed into a guardrail and flipped onto its roof, Delaware State Police said.

It happened Thursday about 3:15 p.m. on Route 1 in Bear.

Troopers say a 1996 Mitsubishi 3000G driven by a 17-year-old male was traveling at an apparent high rate of speed when it tried to change lanes. The driver lost control of the car, which began to rotate, struck a guardrail and turned onto its roof.

The unidentified driver who wasn’t wearing a seat belt was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, cops said.

His 16-year-old female passenger who was buckled up was also pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The northbound lanes of Del. Route 1 were closed for about 3.5 hours while police investigated.
