A man is in the hospital after falling down a manhole in South Philadelphia.

It happened Friday afternoon in the 1200 block of Jackson Street.

Neighbor Tim Raggio says the lid was off the manhole because work crews were clearing sewer lines on their street.

The victim, 67, was wiping the rain off his car, Raggio said, and he somehow fell into the manhole.

The man was eventually rescued and taken to Jefferson Hospital.

"He was conscious. . .He was standing up and able to communicate," Raggio said.
