Fort Delaware Opens

State parks officials say the popular Fort Delaware historic site is opening this weekend for the summer season.

The fort near Delaware City will be open Saturdays in May, weekends and holidays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, and Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from June 12 through Labor Day.

Travel to the fort is via ferry from either Delaware City or Barber's Basin in Salem, N.J.

Officials say that no ferries are available from the pier facility at Fort Mott, N.J., because of severe storm damage.

Fort Delaware was a Union fortress dating to 1859 that once housed Confederate prisoners of war. It was originally built to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia.
