Rihanna, Frank Ocean to Perform at MTV Video Music Awards

Singers join Taylor Swift, One Direction and Pink for the Sept. 6 presentation.

MTV announced Monday that superstar Rihanna and breakout artist Frank Ocean have been added to the list of those performing at next week's Video Music Awards' presentation.

The two headliners will take the stage along with Taylor Swift (whose most memorable VMA appearance involved Kanye West crashing her acceptance speech in 2009), Pink, One Direction, Green Day and Alicia Keys. Presenters on the night will include The Wanted,  Andy Samberg, Rashida Jones, Ke$ha, 2 Chainz, Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa and the gold medal-winning U.S. women's Olympic gymnastic team.

Rihanna and Drake lead the awards run-up with five nominations each, with Rihanna given the nod twice in the coveted video of the year category for her hit "We Found Love," and her duet with Drake on "Take Care." Last year's big winner Katy Perry is not far behind the music powerhouses with four nominations. Voting is now open in all categories through the MTV website.

As with any VMA presentation, the most talked about moments will probably not be the acceptance speeches (Swift/West dust-up not withstanding), but the surprise performances and guest appearances.

Last year, Beyonce chose the VMAs to make a grand entrance and reveal that she was expecting her first child with husband Jay Z. In 2010 it was Lady Gaga and her now infamous meat dress. It's a tradition that dates back to the first ever VMAs in 1984 when Madonna humped the stage during a performance of her mega-hit "Like A Virgin."

The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Thursday, September 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
