Sochi Day 4: What to Watch

Shaun White goes for halfpipe gold, women's ski jump debuts, plus medals in six more events

It's a big day in Sochi.

Two sports Tuesday make their Olympic debut — slopestyle skiing and women's ski jump — eight gold medals are up for grabs, and Shaun White heads to the halfpipe under massive pressure after pulling out of slopestyle to focus exclusively on the marquee Winter Games event.

Figure skating continues with the first non-team event of the games — pairs take the ice for their short skate at 9:30 a.m. ET — while athletes compete for the medal podium in cross-country, biathlon, speed skating and luge.

Meanwhile, curling and women's hockey continues with more than a dozen games throughout the day. Scroll down for more information on when to watch online or on TV.

4 a.m.: Slopestyle snowboarding fans sad to see the Olympic competition wrap up have a new event to watch: Slopestyle skiing makes its Olympic debut on Tuesday. America's top contender, Maggie Voisin, is out of the Games after hurting herself in training. But Team USA's Devin Logan, Julia Krass, and Keri Herman each made the final. Canadian favorite Kaya Turski, meanwhile, failed to advance. Watch the final women's slopestyle skiing round here.

5 a.m.: Shaun White makes his long awaited Sochi debut on the halfpipe course. The event began with a qualification round, followed by semi-finals at 10 a.m. and the gold medal round at 12:30 p.m. This is the first competition on the Sochi halfpipe course, which has been heavily criticized by athletes. After training, several snowboarders complained that the walls were too vertical, the pipe too narrow and bumps on the bottom hazardous. Workers tried to make adjustments to the course, but had little time to respond to all the rider feedback. Tune in for the qualifier here to see how well these problems were solved.

Women's ice hockey begins with Germany taking on Sweden, while men's and women's cross-country skiers compete in their first individual sprint. (Watch hockey here and cross-country here.)

American men compete against China. If you're following Norway for their flamboyant outfits, or for their curling, tune in to their game against Russia at 5 a.m. Click here for all live matches.

7:45 a.m.: Women take the first of two runs in the 500m speed skating race. Skater Heather Richardson could be the first American to win a medal in the women's event since 2002. Skaters compete in their final race at 9:30 a.m. Their scores are then added together and medals determined. Watch the medal race here

8:20 a.m.: Ladies' cross-country skiers race for the medal podium in the free sprint finals. Men do the same just 10 minutes later. Watch live here.

Women's lugers also take their third of four runs. (Watch here.) Their fourth and final run begins at 11:20 a.m.

10 a.m.: Halfpipe snowboarders compete for a spot in the finals (watch here), Russia plays Japan in women's ice hockey, while pair figure skaters take the ice for their short program. The U.S. sends pairs Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir (10:55 a.m.) and Felicia Zhang and Nate Bartholomay (11:01 a.m.) to the ice, though neither are expected to make the podium. This is Russia's event and Tatyana Volosozhar and Maksim Trankov are expected to dominate.

10:30 a.m.: Women compete for the medal podium in the biathlon 10k pursuit.

12:30 p.m.: This could be Shaun White's moment. Medals are handed out after the men's halfpipe final, live on NBCOlympics.com.

Meanwhile, women's ski jumping makes its Olympic debut. Three women will compete for the U.S.: Jessica Jerome, Sarah Hendrickson and Lindsey Van, one of the leaders of a years-long battle to get the sport onto the most prestigious international stage. Qualifications are at 12:30, while the medal round begins at 1:25 p.m. here.
