There’s still no official announcement, but MLB Trade Rumors and multiple other outlets have reported that Pat Burrell, 35, will announce his retirement ending a 12-year career, namely due to chronic foot problems.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 1998 MLB draft by the Phillies out of the University of Miami (Fla.), Burrell never developed into the superstar many projected, though he did hit over 20 home runs nine times and spent nine years in Philadelphia. He famously led the parade through town after the Phillies won the 2008 World Series on the horse-drawn carriage.
He’ll end his career with 292 home runs over 11 seasons with three teams, two World Series championships (2008 and 2010 in San Francisco). He is fourth all-time on the Phillies home run list (251) behind Mike Schmidt (548), Ryan Howard (286) and Del Ennis (259).
