Get more change out because driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike is going to cost you more starting this weekend especially if you donโt have E-ZPass.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission said Wednesday most cash-paying customers will see a 10 percent increase, while E-ZPass users will pay 2 percent more. Motorists on the Southern Beltway in the Pittsburgh area will see a steeper increase in cash tolls.
The increases take effect Sunday.
The commission has been expanding the differential between cash and electronic tolls since 2011. E-ZPass travelers saved up to 17 percent last year, and the pending changes will widen that to 25 percent in 2013.
โSince the Turnpike launched E-ZPass more than a dozen years ago, customers have valued the benefits they get from going cashless, including safety, convenience and environmental advantages,โ said Acting Turnpike CEO Craig Shuey. โNow, by setting up a toll schedule that helps E-ZPass users save about 25 percent compared to cash, weโve provided a more appealing incentive for those whoโve been meaning to sign up.โ
As part of a campaign to convert the turnpike to all-electronic tolls, officials have reduced fees in the E-ZPass program.
Motorists can sign up for E-ZPass online or by calling 1-877-Penn-Pass (1-877-736-6727)
