Goo Goo Dolls “Welcome America” on July 4th

The Welcome America celebration is returning with a new name a full slate of free events throughout the city.

Wawa takes over for Sunoco as the primary sponsor for the 2010 festivities.

The ten-day celebration will kick off with the Taste of Philadelphia tasting event in Penn’s Landing on June 25. The following night Morris Day and the Time of Purple Rain fame will be funking it up on the waterfront.

Over the next week there will be a slew of activity including a Rocky Balboa lookalike contest, movie screenings, the 12th annual Super Scooper All-You-Can-Eat Ice Cream Festival at Penn’s Landing and Hot Dog Day in Historic Philadelphia.

And, Wawa Hoagie Day on June 30 at the Art Museum -- they are the sponsors of course.

But the big blast will come when the Goo Goo Dolls "Slide" onto the Ben Franklin Parkway stage for a concert and fireworks on Independence Day.

“Philadelphia is the only place to be during the 4th of July,” said Mayor Michael Nutter. “Wawa Welcome America offers all the entertainment, history, culture, and fun that families hope to find in the summer and it’s all here in the city where our nation began.”
