Phils, Kendrick Drop Marlins in Game 1

The Phillies moved a game closer to their third-straight division crown Thursday afternoon with a 3-1 win over the Florida Marlins.

The Phils took Game 1 of the day/night doubleheader behind five strong innings from Kyle Kendrick (8-6) who allowed just two hits and a hit batter while striking out six.

Michael Stutes, Antonio Bastardo, Brad Lidge and Ryan Madson were shaky but held on to throw four scoreless innings. Madson closed the door for his 31st save.

Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez (8-8) gave up two first inning runs on a pair of RBI doubles from Hunter Pence and Raul Ibanez to take the loss.

The Phillies added an insurance run in the seventh on a Placido Polanco bases loaded walk.

The game, rescheduled from a pair of games canceled during Hurricane Irene, was played through some bizarre weather. Rain fell intermittently throughout the game as temperatures dropped from 74 at game time down to the low 60s by the end.

The teams wrap up a day of baseball Thursday night when Cliff Lee (16-7, 2.44 ERA) battle the chillier air as he tries to add to his Cy Young-caliber resume against young Marlins righty Alex Sanabia (0-0, 0.00).
