Source: Flyers Still Making Decision on R.J. Umberger

On the first day of the NHL’s buyout period, the Flyers were silent in regard to removing R.J. Umberger from the roster.

Umberger admitted after the season he expected the club to buy out the final year of his contract in which he will earn $4.6 million.

An NHL source said the Flyers were waiting at least one more day before making a decision on Umberger.

The Flyers would save $3 million on his buyout this year while reducing their cap hit to just $1.6 million. They can spread the buyout over two years, too. If they did this, they would have at least $10.5 million in cap space, assuming the cap hovers around $71 million next season.

The current cap is $71.4 million. It’s expected to go up slightly, perhaps to $72 million, or could go down, given the weakness in the Canadian dollar.

The 35-year-old Umberger played just 35 games this season with two goals and 11 points. Coach Dave Hakstol benched him in 24 of the Flyers’ final 25 games.
