Philadelphia Eagles Sign Rambo. Get to Know Hurts' College Teammate, ex-XFLer

Eagles sign one of Hurts’ favorite college receivers after tryout originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Eagles on Tuesday made a minor roster swap, signing receiver Charleston Rambo and waiving offensive tackle Jarrid Williams.

The notable part of this roster move his that Rambo was one of Jalen Hurts’ top targets at Oklahoma in 2019.

Rambo, 23, played in the XFL this season but was with the Eagles at their rookie camp earlier this month as a tryout player. He must have done something to impress the Eagles enough to stick around.

“What we'll try to do with some of the tryout guys is we had a little extra session just for the guys that we knew that it could be only two days that we get to see them,” head coach Nick Sirianni said when asked what it would take for a tryout player to catch his eye. “So, we had a little extra session at the end to make sure that we don't miss on an Adam Thielen, right. I think he was a tryout guy, at least in my little notebook, I have it, and I said, don't miss Adam Thielen.”

Back in 2019, Hurts’ only year at Oklahoma, the Sooners’ top receiver was first-round pick CeeDee Lamb, who had 62 catches for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Their second-leading receiver? It was Rambo, who caught 43 passes for 743 yards and 5 touchdowns. Rambo (6-1, 185) finished up his college career playing at Oklahoma again in 2020 and then at Miami in 2021. His season at Miami was his best in college with 79 catches, 1,172 yards and 7 touchdowns but he went undrafted last season.

Rambo spent last summer in training camp with the Carolina Panthers before he was waived at final cuts. He was then drafted by the Orlando Guardians of the XFL. In the 2023 XFL season, Rambo had 35 catches on 49 targets for 430 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was 10th in the XFL in receiving yards.

Rambo is now one of 11 receivers on the Eagles’ roster, joining A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Quez Watkins, Olamide Zaccheaus, Britain Covey, Tyrie Cleveland, Devon Allen, Greg Ward Jr., Joseph Ngata and Jadon Haselwood.
