Phillies Acquire INF/OF Jimmy Paredes From Blue Jays; DFA Emmanuel Burriss

The Phillies on Wednesday acquired infielder/outfielder Jimmy Paredes from the Blue Jays for cash considerations. The trade comes two weeks after the Phils reportedly placed a waiver claim on Paredes when he went from Baltimore to Toronto. The Blue Jays designated him for assignment on Monday.

To make room for Paredes on the 25-man roster, the Phillies designated Emmanuel Burris for assignment.

Paredes, 27, has hit .257/.294/.373 in six big-league seasons with the Astros, Royals and Orioles. His best season was 2015, when he hit .275 with 10 homers and 42 RBIs with Baltimore.

Paredes' value is that he's a switch-hitter who can play all over the field. He played second base, third base, left field and right field for the Orioles last season. The Phillies are obviously starved for corner outfield offense.

Paredes has been much better throughout his career as a left-handed hitter. As a lefty, he's hit .271 with a .705 OPS and 15 of his 16 career home runs. As a righty, he's hit just .201 with a .511 OPS. Switch-hitters with significant platoon splits tend to have more value when they're better from the left side because approximately 65 percent of major-league pitchers are right-handers.

Burriss went 4 for 33 (.121) with the Phillies and 0 for 9 in three starts.
