The Phillies on Wednesday placed starter Aaron Nola on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow.
Nola was to start that night's game against the San Francisco Giants. Instead, right-handed pitcher Phil Klein has been called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and will get the start.
Whether this injury is the root of Nola's recent struggles is uncertain. On June 5, Nola pitched six shutout innings in a victory over the Brewers to improve to 5-4 on the season and lower his ERA to 2.65. He failed to make it past the fourth inning in his next four starts and allowed at least four earned runs in seven of his last eight. He heads to the DL 6-9 with a 4.78 ERA.
The Phils also placed closer Jeanmar Gomez on the paternity list and called up righthander Michael Mariot from Lehigh Valley.
Klein in eight games (four starts) this season with the IronPigs is 1-1 with a 2.13 ERA. In 25 1/3 innings he's struck out 25 and walked only six.
