Instant Replay: Redskins 27, Eagles 22

BOX SCORE

They certainly didn’t quit on Sunday. But they couldn’t get a win either.

The Eagles almost pulled off a late-game win but fell, 27-22, to Washington at the Linc on a frigid December Sunday. Carson Wentz was leading the Eagles down the field late in the fourth quarter with a chance to win the game, but Wentz was sacked and fumbled the ball away.

The Eagles have now lost four straight.

With the loss, the Eagles are now 5-8. They haven’t won since Nov. 13 against Atlanta. Washington improved to 7-5-1 with the win and swept the season series between the two teams.

The Eagles got the ball back with 1:53 left in the fourth quarter, but Wentz and the rest of the offense wasn’t able to drive down the field and score to win the game.

After the Eagles took a lead in the fourth quarter, Washington marched down the field and scored on a 25-yard Chris Thompson touchdown run. Washington went 77 yards on eight plays.

The Eagles kicked a 41-yard field goal to take a 22-21 lead in the fourth quarter. They did it with third-string long-snapper Trey Burton. Holder Donnie Jones was able to get the snap down.

Leodis McKelvin picked off a Kirk Cousins pass and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown to pull the Eagles within two. But the Eagles’ pass attempt on the two-point conversion failed.

The Eagles took a lead into the third quarter, but Kirk Cousins hit DeSean Jackson with an 80-yard bomb to give Washington its first lead of the game. A little bit later, Cousins connected with Pierre Garcon on a 15-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead.

Thompson’s 25-yard touchdown run gave Washington the final lead of the game.

On the drive before the Eagles scored their touchdown to take a lead into the locker room, Washingotn put together a 10-play, 69-yard scoring drive. Running back Rob Kelley scored on a big 22-yard touchdown run.

Before that drive, the Eagles got six points from Caleb Sturgis. Their kicker hit a 36-yarder and a 45-yarder in the first half.

Offensive stud
Zach Ertz had a big game. He caught 10 passes for 112 yards.

Offensive dud
With Dorial Green-Beckham out, Nelson Agholor should have had some extra opportunity, but had just two catches for 22 yards.

Defensive stud
Fletcher Cox had 1½ sacks. Before Sunday, he hadn’t had a sack since the Detroit game Oct. 9.

Defensive dud
Nolan Carroll was beaten by Garcon on a 15-yard touchdown in the second half.

Injury update
Wendell Smallwood left in the first half with a right knee injury and was unable to return. Jon Dorenbos, Allen Barbre and Brent Celek also left early with injury.

Brandon Brooks was a surprise inactive again. For the second time in three weeks, he missed a game because of illness. Green-Beckham (abdomen) and Halapoulivaati Vaitai (knee) also missed Sunday’s game.

Up next
The Eagles have their last road game of the year next week in Baltimore. Then they’ll return for the final two home games of the year against the Giants and Cowboys.
