All Quiet on the Flyers Front

The trade deadline came and went with the Flyers not making any moves.

Most suspected the Flyers would look into acquiring a defenseman or a goalie after it was announced Ray Emery would be out for the season.

“At the end of the day, we decided to just stand pat,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. “I’ve said all along that I like our team -- that hasn’t changed.”

The Flyers had to contend with some trading hurdles. They don't have much available salary cap space (around $2.6 million) and not many attractive draft prospects or draft picks available as trade bait.

“The guys we inquired about weren’t moved just because the teams decided to stand pat,” Holmgren said.

Those guys were goalies Tomas Vokoun and Dwayne Roloson and defenseman Dan Hamhuis, according to Philly.com.

However, Holmgren said he wasn’t too worried about the goalie situation with the way Michael Leighton has played.

“I personally never made one call about goalie,” Holmgren said. “I don’t think anyone can argue with Leighton’s numbers right now. He’s played outstanding since he’s been in the net for us.”

Holmgren’s main concern seemed to be making the playoffs.

“If you get in, anything can happen,” Holmgren said. “Our fight right now is to get in the playoffs and then we’ll see what happens when we get in. I like our team against anybody.”

Overall, this year’s trade deadline was pretty much a snooze fest. Only 25 trades were made (none involving big names) compared to 45 at last year’s deadline.

Holmgren stressed that despite looking into some trades he was still happy with the Fly Guys.

“I hate to keep saying this but I like our team. That didn’t mean we didn’t look into changing it but like I said nothing really made sense and we didn’t believe anything made us better.”
