It's All on the Line for Specter

Specter's career, party switch on line vs. Sestak

Embattled Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter will find out whether switching parties was the right career move in his quest for a sixth term.

Specter and his challenger, U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, were campaigning Tuesday in the hours before polls close in Pennsylvania's too-close-to-call Democratic primary.

Specter has held the seat since 1981 and is endorsed by the Democratic Party. He's running his first Senate campaign as a Democrat after he switched parties last year.

Speaking at his suburban Philadelphia polling place, Sestak called Specter a โ€œcareer politicianโ€ who switched parties to keep his job and can't fix the country's ills.

Specter, a longtime moderate, says he has no regrets over supporting President Barack Obama's economic stimulus bill. That vote angered GOP voters and prompted Specter's switch.
