A new poll dabbling in hypothetical matchups shows Mitt Romney would only slightly cut into President Barack Obama's lead in New Jersey by putting Gov. Chris Christie on the ticket as the GOP's vice presidential nominee.
The Quinnipiac University poll out Wednesday shows Romney picking up 4 points by running with Christie -- but still losing New Jersey by 6 points.
"...If the measure of a vice presidential pick is carrying his or her home state, then Gov. Christie comes up short," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
There is also a huge gender gap in the poll as 51 percent of men vote Republican while 55 percent of women vote Democratic.
The poll also shows Christie remains popular at home. Fifty-five percent of respondents approve of the job the first-term Republican is doing, compared with 38 percent who disapprove.
Respondents also approve of Christie's proposal to cut income taxes by 10 percent, a plan opposed by Democrats.
The telephone survey of 1,396 registered voters was conducted Feb. 21-27 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
