Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill that would create "right-to-work" zones in Delaware in an effort to spur economic development.
Under the legislation introduced Thursday, a person would not be required to be a member of a labor union or to pay union dues as a condition of employment.
The state economic development director would be allowed to create a right-to-work zone when at least 20 new employees are to be hired by a manufacturing business. The manufacturer also would be exempt from having to pay the state gross receipts tax on businesses for the first five years that it is licensed and operating in the right-to-work zone.
The bill has been assigned to the Senate Labor & Industrial Relations Committee.
